Type 1 Diabetes – The Diagnosis

25. February 2010 by Super Mega Dad 15 Comments

It's tough cleaning up!Every so often in a person’s life, life changing events happen that completely and utterly turn your world upside down.  Maybe it’s a death in the family, a major natural disaster, or simply having children.  One of the most feared occurrences in life are diseases that one has no control over.  Occurrences like this are devastating on their own if they happen to you, but doubly so when and if it happens to your children.  Your children are your BABIES, and, generally speaking, they are born perfect and flawless in your eyes.  You want them to grow up with as few challenges as possible and you will take things on to yourself that you would have never done back in your single days in order to make their lives easier.

We had something happen to us recently that turned our lives around and made us change how we do almost everything.

Around Christmas time this past year, I knew something wasn’t quite right with Princess K.  She was drinking water like it was going out of style, and peeing constantly throughout the day and night.  She was peeing in her bed several times a night, which she hadn’t ever done before (granted, she was a new recruit in the potty training scene, but it was just unlike her to be like this).

Super Mega Mommy was in the hospital at the time, so I thought that it could possibly be stress related, or even possibly a bladder infection, urinary tract infection, or some other unknown aliment.  She had recently received a H1N1 vaccination and had ran a fever for a week afterwards, so I thought it was possibly related to the vaccination.

After a week or so of these issues and her not getting any better to speak of, I decided that it was time to take her to visit her doctor’s office and have the doctor have a look at her.  To be honest, I was starting to fear that she might have diabetes because of the symptoms she had, but I really hoped that it was something else much more minor.

After a blood test, a urine test, and a minor California Earthquake that shook the building, the doctor told us in a matter-of-fact way that Princess K indeed had Type 1 diabetes.  The doctor told us in a way that she would tell someone that they had a slight sniffle.  Sounding, to my ears, that this was something that was no big deal.  My head said, “Impossible!  This is my perfect little baby girl.  She can’t have anything like this!”

The doctor told us to go home, pack enough supplies for a few days stay at the hospital, and that they would take care of everything.  They would setup our room at the hospital and call me at home to let me know where and when to go.  I called Super Mega Nana to watch Super Michael for a few days and gave her the bad news.

We started packing our suitcases for an extended stay at the hospital, trying to think of things that we needed all while my head kept screaming, “This isn’t happening to us, the doctor’s are wrong!  We are going to go to the hospital and the doctor’s THERE are going to tell me that our local doctor was wrong, Princess K just has a bad urinary tract infection and to go home and get some antibiotics.”

I fed the kids lunch, sat down, and calmed myself down and proceeded to wait for the phone to ring.  This was probably the longest hour in my life since the time we waited in the hospital for the kids to be born.

When the phone finally did ring, it was almost a relief knowing that we would now get this thing taken care of.  We were now off to Rady’s Children’s Hospital in San Diego.

Join us next week as we continue our adventures at the hospital.  Next time on Super Mega Dad: Super Mega Dad blames himself and Halloween, we learn a bunch of new things, and have fun painting our little hearts out!

I'm so sad to hear this news. It's breaking my heart. I will pray for you and your baby girl. I know you're not really a deeply spiritual man but I thought I would encourage you with this. You can look it up when you have the time. John 9:1-3
Peace Bro.

Hey Ed, thanks for stopping by and the well wishes.  It's all good, come back as I continue this series.  It gets better as we go and you'll get to see how much we learned in the process.  I wanted to do just one post with the whole diabetes adventure, but you know how long winded I am.  It was an incredible journey and we've learned a lot.

It was pretty tough to start out with.  Having Super Mega Mommy in the hospital at the same time really had me split in a couple different directions at the time.  We've gotten a lot better though.  Stay tuned! Smile

To be completely honest with you, if she HAD to have it, I'd rather she goes through this at 3/4 then 13/14.  Going through this early, I believe, is less traumatic and she won't really know any different.

I'm really sorry to hear that. Reading your post made me realize how unprepared I truly am if something were to ever go wrong health-wise with my son. I'd be in just as much shock as you are.

Thankfully your daughter has a great family and support system and kids are resilient as hell. Good luck to you guys and we'll be reading and rooting her on.

Well, i'm sorry to hear about the diagnosis.  I wish you all the best in your journey through it.  I have first hand experience about having a kid in hospital so I realize that can be quite stressful.  Good luck to you and I'll keep reading.

Wow, sorry to hear about this SMD, sounds like you have already been through a lot with this.  I hope things are a bit normalized by now and that sweet little Princess K is doing well.

Mate, sorry to hear this. It will take a while to get used to. Many ups and downs. As a type 1 diabetic since the age of 17 (20 years) I can say that it's hard when first diagnosed but it's not the end of the world. Twenty years later I am sitting here having a (low carb) beer, with my three boys running around me and my wife, a nice house, a powerlifting club I have been training at for ten years, a good DVD to watch with the wife tonight, lots of great stuff in my life, and lots to look forward to. I wish your daughter, you and your family all the best.
