Favorite Film Characters

14. April 2009 by Super Mega Dad 13 Comments

James over at Luke, I Am Your Father tagged me with the 'Favorite Film Characters" meme a few days back, so I have to get up from my nap here and get working on this thing.

Since, generally speaking, my movie going experiences in the past few years has been limited to "family" fare, this as a little tough for me.  Sure, Lighting McQueen was a pretty cool character but I wouldn't put him on any of my top ten lists.  Super Michael?  Probably on HIS top 10.

So, in no particular order, here we go:

Darth Maul - Star Wars - Episode One

Why is he cool?  This was the first "really cool" Jedi-Sith lightsaber fight in the film franchise, and it still gives me chills watching that dual lightsaber igniting.  Ray Park was a great find for a Sith Lord.  Darth Vader is pretty cool too, and OH SO BEAUTIFULLY EVIL, but there just weren't any cool looking fights with him.  James' "I am your father" pick is pretty cool, but I still like the Darth Maul fight better.  The only thing that would have made it better is if Darth Maul cut Jar-Jar in half.  OK, James, go ahead and flame me now. ;)
Neo - The Matrix Trilogy
Why is he cool?  It's a total computer geek fantasy to be THE MAN that can control all the crap in the Universe like Neo eventually can.  Granted the last two movies weren't AS good as the first one, but the last Neo-Agent Smith fight WAS pretty cool to watch.
Captain Jack Sparrow - Pirates of the Caribbean movies
Why is he cool?  Come on, how is he NOT cool.  He's drunk ALL the time, and he has just incredible timing.  He appears to not care about anything or anyone, but deep down he's a gentleman at heart.  And chicks dig bad boys.  I was never a bad boy. :(
Peter Parker - Spider Man Movies
Why is he cool?  1.  He can spin webs from his HANDS.  2.  He can swing from these webs from buildings.  3.  He can stop a speeding train with his bare hands and LOTS of those webs.  4.  Chicks dig dudes in masks.
Wolverine - X-Men Movies
Why is he cool?  He's indestructible and he has really cool claws. And you gotta love the hair.  I wish I had enough to pull it off. I can name several meetings that I've been in that I would have loved to have those claws.  Ditto for the DMV.
Riddick - Chronicles of Riddick/Pitch Black
Why is he cool?  Two words:  Eye Shine.  And he kicks major ass.  And you just gotta love that bald head.  Bald head, I can do!  And what other movie DARES to kill a man with a coffee cup? I have lots of coffee cups, but I'm pretty sure I can't push it through anyone's chest...no matter how hard I try.
King Leonidas - 300
Why is he cool?  The six pack, of course!  This movie was the first one I bought in HD and I could just feel the blood pouring out of the TV.  King Leonidas takes crap from no one.  Then we will fight in the shade, indeed, my Spartan friend. I just wish I looked NEAR as good in a Speedo.  There are city laws that prevent me from walking around anywhere in the city limits in a Speedo.  This is probably a good law.  That's why I voted for it.
Homer Simpson - The Simpsons Movie
Why is he cool?  Homer has been a mainstay in the Super Mega Household since I was just a little Super Mega Lad.  Of course, when I was a lad, I had to watch it on my own damn TV because my parents just didn't get the humor.  Super Mega Mommy still frowns at me when she walks into the room and I'm watching this, so needless to say, it's DVR only and watched when everybody goes to bed.  But it's only a cartoon!  Come on! She was even less thrilled when I taught both kids how to say DOHHHHH!  DOHHHH!
Alex Rogan - The Last Starfighter
Why is he cool?  This one came out in my early teenage years when I was a total computer/video game nerd (well, still am, but that's another story) and this just played to every teenage boy fantasy out there. I have been recruited by the star league to defend the frontier against Zur and the Kodan Armada.  Where do I sign up?! And Centari just had the coolest car ever.  Just think how quickly you could get through traffic with a Star Car!
Captain James T. Kirk
Why is he cool?  Captain Kirk always gets the girl. He is the captain of the greatest star ship in the galaxy, the bad guys all curse his name, and he can travel through time!  Kahnnnnnnn! I am SO looking forward to the new Star Trek movie!
So, there you have it.  My total nerd movie list.
So, now I need to tag some other bloggers for this meme...who should I pick?
  1. Awesome mommy, Lana over at The Kids Did WHAT? because, hey, it's a new meme!
  2. Captain Dumbass over at Us and Them, just because James didn't get him! :)
  3. Busy-Dad-E, just because he's not Bus-E E-nuff.
  4. Otter Thomas over at Life of a New Dad who happens to be WAY less nerdy than me.  Hell, he even is into sports and stuff. :)
  5. Daddy Geek Boy because his list MIGHT be geekier then mine, but probably not.

Enjoy guys and gals!

And thanks for waking me up James!  Now that I look around the house, it's a complete MESS.  And there's a 3 year old right in the middle of it!  DOHHHH!

Thanks for the tag.  I enjoyed your selections.  The best one might just be the Last Starfighter.  Why did they never make that game for Nintendo?  Makes me want to go all Death Blossom on my bus-E-ness!  Or at least get a beta-unit to help me out!  Hope that you and your family are well.

Awesome list!  You have a penchant for the super hero/average guy movies, don't you?  Thanks for playing along.  You got me and Mrs. LIAYF excited for a few new movies.  We are now planning monthly date nights and might actually get to watch a few - we used to go to the Seattle Cinerama for all the sci-fi premieres.  It was refurbished by Paul Allen (sci-fi geek) and has great seats and sound.

BTW, Mrs. LIAYF loves Wolverine - so I couldn't put him on my list.  She has a not so secret crush, but says it's only because he's ALMOST as cool as I am.  She loves me.

DUDE, you are totally in luck.  They have a FREEWARE version of the Last Starfighter game out now.  Sure, it's a little dated, but HEY, it's free.  And even better, they are working on the Last Starfighter 2 movie...supposed to be a Son of Starfighther type of thing.  Passing on the torch and all that.  I'm not a geek at all.
@ James:I am MISTER average guy here with an inner super hero just waiting to break out.  Smile

I'm glad I could help you out with the date night thing.  I'm still working on Super Mega Mommy with that. ;)

Wolverine is DREAMY. ;)

@ Lana:I know how you love you some meme's, so I'm glad I could help.

I can't believe any self-respecting geek would omit Boba Fett from such a list.  I mean, that's enough to put your membership on probation dude.

As for the average guy thing, I'm there with you, which is why I've got Batman  (no super powers, just mad skill and financing) and The Punisher (again, no powers, just rage) higher than Spider-man.

Okay, so here's my top 10 (in no particular order, and in abbreviated form).  I've included villains, too, just because they're great characters (not because I agree with them.)

1. Yoda (in ANY Star Wars film)
2. Daniel Larruso (from the original Karate Kid)
3. Indiana Jones (except for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull)
4. Hannibal Lecter (in Silence of the Lambs)
5. The Joker (in Dark Night)
6. Maximus (in Gladiator)
7. Gus Portokalos (in My Big Fat Greek Wedding)
8. Jack Byrnes (in Meet the Parents/Fockers)
9. Danny Archer (in Blood Diamond)
10. Horatio Cane (CSI:Miami, okay so it's tv and not film, but it's the only tv show I watch, and he's too much of a bad @$$ to leave him out).

Well, my list could have included ALL Star Wars characters, but I thought that would be just TOO nerdy.  Boba Fett!  Man, I can't believe I forgot him.  He IS pretty bad ass. Not everybody can go up against a Jedi.
@ Busy-Dad-E: Great list Busy-Dad-E!  The Joker was a great one too!  I JUST watched the new Batman movie last week and it was really great.
@ Otter: Maybe we should start a secret Simpson's watching club where all the beaten down hubbies can get together in a secret location and enjoy their favorite show.  I'll also need to start a South Park club, since that is "just disgusting".
