Daylight Savings Makes Me Sad

10. March 2009 by Super Mega Dad 5 Comments

Around these parts, we have something wonderful called "Daylight Savings Time".  It's that wonderful time of year when you set the clocks forward one whole hour to make more daylight during the night and much less sunlight when you actually wake up in the morning.  Generally, when daylight savings time comes, everybody and their brother warn you that it's coming, usually several days in advance.  This year it just kind of snuck up on me.  I didn't see anything in the news, and from what I gather, no one else knew either.  The only way I knew to change my clocks was to read the morning paper Saturday to change the clocks THAT night.

And, as is normal when this happens, Daylight Savings Time kicked my ass.  It just throws my whole body clock off.  I tend to stay up later the first few nights, and I just can't wake up the next morning because the sun hasn't come up yet at 6:30 in the morning.  I feel like I'm getting up in the middle of the night and my body just wants to go back to sweet, sweet beddy-bye.  And to top it all off, I'm going through this three month long cold after cold after cold issue.  I just start to get over one cold, and the kids bring home something else from school.  I'm REALLY sick of being sick at this point.

Before the time change, the kids woke up on their own and were only semi-cranky in the morning.  Now that we're on a new time schedule, I have to wake them up from being sound asleep and they are EXTRA cranky having to get up "so early" in the morning.  This makes them pretty cranky for AT LEAST the first half of the day, if not the ENTIRE day.  And when the kids are cranky all day, this just makes Super Mega Dad cranky as well.  And when Super Mega Dad is cranky, it makes Super Mega Mommy cranky and it just makes the whole day SUPER FUN.

Super Michael asked me tonight why they are having to go to bed so early and why they get up so early now and I had to try to explain to him the whole purpose of "Daylight Savings Time" and they are actually going to bed and getting up at the same time.  I wasn't very enthusiastic about the whole explanation and just had to tell him it was something that "the man" has us do to keep us on our toes and keep from getting bored.  I don't think he was entirely convinced that he was going to bed at the same time.

It usually takes me a week or two to get back into the whole groove of things and to be able to get up without having the alarm clock getting me up every morning.  And at night, it just seems like I run out of steam completely by 8PM.

Or maybe that it's just that I'm getting old?  Next thing you know, I'll be eating dinner (or do you call it "supper" when you get old?) at 3PM and in bed by 6PM and back awake at 5:30 each morning.  On the positive side, I'd have a much better excuse to take a nap each day.

OK, changing gears here....I promised someone (you KNOW who you are!) that I would make a blog post about something near and dear to my heart for her:  Diaper Rash Medication.

Both of my kids had severe diaper rash issues when they were little babies and still in diapers...well, Princess K is STILL in diapers, but hopefully we'll get over THAT soon.  Their little butts would get super red sometimes and the regular diaper rash stuff really hurt them.  They would just scream when we would put that old white stuff on and we felt really bad about it.  We went through a lot of trial and error with poor Super Michael (our "test case" kid) and we perfected a lot of our routines with him, so by the time Princess K came along, she had a MUCH easier time with things.

One of the things we discovered fairly early on is the magic sauce known as Aquaphor.  I completely swear by this stuff for any type of skin issue.  It pretty much cleared up my kids diaper rash overnight with NO pain whatsoever.  It came to be known around here as "Super Secret Butt Cream", but we use it for EVERYTHING.  Kind of like what my parents used Windex and Seven-Up for.  Got a cold?  Drink Seven-Up.  Tooth Ache?  Drink Seven-Up and spray Windex on it.  But, ANYWAY, nowadays we use it for rashes or other skin issues.  Super Michael is going through a phase where he chews on the sleeve of his jackets and this causes his chin to get all chapped.  You use the Super Secret Butt Cream on his face, and the chapped skin goes away overnight.  It's really awesome stuff.

So, there, I blogged about the Super Secret Butt Cream.  This will probably explain things to Super Michael's teacher if he mentions to her that he has butt cream on his face.  We're not REALLY that odd.  We just play odd on TV.

I've never pinned down a good reason why just a one-hour time change throws everyone, especially the kiddos, so off kilter.  That said, I love to "spring foward" because it means more time for going on walks and playing outside after dinner.

If you ever want to try "Super Secret Butt Cream" on STEROIDS, just mix some liquid Maalox in equal parts with the Aquaphor and stir it up well.  Looks like h-e-double hockey sticks, but does the job.  No joke.

@ Busy-Dad-E:Maloox and Aquaphor?  Interesting.  You just gotta love the Internets.  You learn all kinds of interesting things. Smile
@ Otter:I forgot about that episode!  Sounds like a plan to me.  That or the "stupid government" for making it last longer to "save energy".

Yes, there is a definite adjustment period for this.  For the early birds, it is dark in the morning again, but not for too long I suppose.

Still tring to adjust to DST!  And Aquaphor is great stuff, but we use it on Lukas' face to prevent cold wheather chapping an A&D Cream with Zinc Oxide for the Bum (wonderful stuff).
