Super Mega Dad is back in 1st Grade

This is the homework that Super Michael SHOULD be working on:

This is ACTUALLY what he's doing:

Why, oh why is it SO painful to get him to do his homework each day?  Especially after getting back into school after a holiday?

It takes him a good half an hour to an hour to do a single sheet of addition and subtraction homework now because he spends so much time whining and staring off into space.  Granted, his old man did the same thing when he was young, but now he's doing it to ME and that is NOT cool.

With all of his homework and having to sit down with him and go over EVERY SINGLE math question...OK Super Michael, what is 1 plus 2...I don't KNOW!....OK, let's try this another way, you have ONE APPLE and Super Mommy gives you TWO MORE APPLES, how many apples do you have NOW?....I DON'T KNOW!  I NEED HELP!, I really feel like I'M the one back in first grade.  It's just been so frustrating with him.

Tomorrow, I'm going to try a new trick and give him a big 'ol pile of pennies to count with.  I think this will work, because it lets him play with one of his favorite things...MONEY!

What does everybody else do with their kids when they don't do their homework?  Any suggestions to get him motivated?

His other issue is with writing...he completely refuses to write anything remotely resembling a word.  And when he does, his writing is SO horrible that you can't even read it.  Again, just like his big daddy! Most of the time, I can't even read my OWN writting.

Maybe I SHOULD go back to 1st grade! :)

Hi there. Thanks for visiting my blog!
Yes, it IS incredibly frustrating to help "encourage" a little one to do homework. Braden, who is in grade 2 pulls the same "I don't KNOW" trick. It makes me want to rip out my hair. It's come to the point where he comes home from school, has a snack, and isn't allowed to move from his spot until at least half of his work is done. It should only take 15 minutes in total, but he likes to punish me. he's drawn it out to an hour and half before, for only 10 math questions. If you get any advice, pass it along this way!!!

@ Lana:
I think the penny trick might work...my kids are pretty visual.  For some stupid reason, he says the teacher doesn't allow the kids to use their fingers to count!  Hell, I still use MY fingers to count. ;)

Thanks for stopping by, your blog is awesome!

UPDATE!  The pennies WORKED!  He did his math homework in only 5 minutes tonight using pennies to count out the problems.  I will now carry a bag of pennies with me everywhere!

Woohoo!
