Michael received his first Kindergarten report card today. It was definately a tense time waiting for it the past week. We even had to go in for parent teacher conference. I guess that's what parents and teachers do with their time anymore. Michael says he wasn't worried at all.
We went in today, I had Michael with me, so he colored quitely by himself while Super Mega Mom and myself sat down in the little teeny tiny chairs at a teeny tiny table while Michael's teacher explained how well Michael was doing in school.
According to his teacher, Michael is doing really well in school. Considering he started from ground zero and having never gone to preschool and refusing to draw or write, or basically learn anything, he's done stupendous. He's gone from never having drawn before to drawing pictures of space ships and houses and people. He went from not knowing anything, or wanting to know anything about letters, spelling, or reading, to knowing all of his letters, knowing the sounds, and starting to recognize and sound out words. We're both pretty proud of him. Even if he doesn't listen to a word we say when he gets home. Maybe he's burnt out from listening by the time he gets home? I'm open to ideas here!
And tomorrow is his award ceremony for all the Kindergarten Star Students, which includes Michael. I'll have to make sure I take lots of pictures and video. We're definately in full parent mode this week.
On another note, Kailynn's daycare is taking pictures of all the little guys AGAIN. Why is it that daycare facilities have pictures every couple of months? Do they really need the money THAT BAD? I can understand their need to have chocolate fund raisers every couple of weeks, but pictures too? How much money can they soak out of parents? I mean, really? And we're starting to have chocolate bars coming out from everywhere in the house. We're running out of places to stash the candy. He can't even eat it fast enough anymore. And that's just from KAILYNN'S school. He have whole other fund raisers from Michael's school as well!
Oh, another note I thought was pretty funny. Kailynn's group, which includes those kids that are the 1 1/2 to 2 year old range is part of the Holiday thing they have going on at her school. Her class has a couple of songs they are supposed to "sing". Most of these kids have about 10 words between all of them. Now how do they expect them to sing? I talked to Kailynn's teacher and she said the kids mostly just sway back and forth during the music. Come on! Couldn't they come up with something a little more age appropriate, say, I don't know, maybe put costumes on them and put them in a play with the older kids? Kailynn could have been a goat or cat or something and wandered around the stage while the older kids sang. To me, it's just too funny. I'll be curious how it all turns out. I'm almost willing to bet they won't get even a hum out of them.
While we're still on the topic of the kids, we're being pounded with birthday parties. There's another one coming up on Saturday and I'm trying to get out of Michael if he even KNOWS this kid. If he doesn't even know the kid, I'm not going to go and spend money on presents and go if he has no clue who the kid is. He's been swearing to me that he plays with this kid all the time and he knows exactly who the kid is and the kid would be very upset if Michael didn't go. Well, I figured out something tonight after we got Michael's school pictures today INCLUDING a class picture. I brought the picture out and asked him to point this kid out to me. If he could point the kid out to me, we'd go to his birthday party. He looked and sweated it out and could mention a bunch of his friends, but couldn't for the life of him point to the kid throwing the birthday party. He still wants to go, though, and I pretty much let my kids walk all over me, so we'll probably go anyway. Super Mega Mom says I'm a big softy with the kids, so I wouldn't want her to be wrong.
Michael and I were watching a movie I recorded off of HBO or some such that I thought he'd like. It's "The Adventures of Elmo in Grouch Land". We watched maybe 30 minutes of it and then he wanted me to turn it off because it was getting too scary! This kid sits down and watches "Who Wants to be a Super Hero" and "Kid Nation" with me and sits through things like "American Dragon" on Disney Channel, not to mention most of the kids movies that come out these days and ELMO is too scary for him? I was watching it with him while I was working and it seemed like a pretty cute movie to me. I guess you never can tell what kids will think of things. Especially with him. He REFUSES to even go upstairs by himself because the "monsters" might get him. We've been trying to tell him that all of the monsters burned up in the last fires we had here in So Cal, but he never listens to us anyway, so why should he start listening to us now? ;)
