One of Those Days

by Super Mega Dad 7. July 2009 22:09

Have you ever had one of those days where you were so busy at work that you didn't have time to pee or eat, let alone finish everything that was on your very full work plate?  Today was one of THOSE days, and I just felt like I didn't even have time to look up from the computer.

Unfortunately (or fortunately?), today was a work from home day, so I worked from my office (the couch) while the kids destroyed the house around me.  Princess K is going through a phase where she pulls games out of the game closet, takes all the pieces out, and spreads them around the house.  And OF COURSE she doesn't want to pick any of it up!  They have been well trained to pretty much entertain themselves and know to go and get their own toys, but the cleaning up aspect of the day has yet to be drilled into their young minds.  I'm there watching over them and making sure they don't get into too much trouble, of course, but today my attention was VERY focused on what I was doing and the mess just got out of hand.  I probably should have taken pictures of this mess to post, but remember, I was pretty busy.  Generally speaking, a few times during the day we have "cleanup" time, but that just didn't happen today.

I am now sitting here looking around at the complete destruction of the house and I can see game pieces, toys, and puzzle pieces everywhere.  I can peer under the couch and see stuff under there.  I can see toys behind things that they shouldn't be behind because Princess K wasn't getting her way and threw a contested toy behind something.

I think the moral of the day is that I need to really work on getting the kids to clean up after themselves.  I've been working pretty hard on getting them to be self sufficient in that they can get their own snacks, they can get their own toys, and Super Michael can even get the Xbox 360 going all by himself.  The standing rule of the house is that they put away toys before they move to another toy, but the practice is sporadic, and I need to be on top of them doing this to keep the habit going.  Days like today just make it very frustrating.

So, anyway, that was MY day.  I think I'll go do some cleaning up and then go to bed....OH, and I REALLY need to pee! :)

OH, one more thing...today was my eight year anniversary!  Exactly eight years ago today, I married the love of my life and the very next day we headed off to a wonderful Alaskan cruise.  It truly was, next to the birth of my children, the greatest day of my life.  We didn't do a damn thing today, but we plan on having some quality time alone together this weekend.  Nana and Papa were kind enough to watch the kids this weekend for us, and we plan on having a nice date night for just the two of us.

This will be the very first time that Princess K has not had either Super Mega Mommy or myself around and we're a little nervous about it.  She's three and a half and she's never been away from both of us.  Sure, either one or the other has been gone from time to time, but never both of us.  I'm SURE she'll be fine because she's been talking about wanting to stay at Nana's house for awhile and she loves her Nana and Papa (as she tells me everyday).  Super Michael stays at Nana's house sometimes, and she's been very jealous of him, so now, not only will she get to spend the night at Nana and Papa's house, but she'll get to be there WITH Super Michael.

I think Super Mega Mommy and myself (well, me mostly, because I'm the one that can't let go) are the ones that are the scared ones.  We already made the comment that we hope we don't spend our date night worrying about the kids and ruining the whole thing.  I know, this type of thing is good for the marriage and all and I just need to cope.  And now that Princess K is a little older AND potty trained, it's probably a good idea to do more quality couple time together.

Anybody else out there have a hard time doing couple things like this?  Is it easy for you, or do you stress out about the kids the entire time?
