The Messes We Make

23. January 2009 by Super Mega Dad 4 Comments

Oh, the messes we make on a daily basis.  If Super Mommy only knew what we got into during the day, she would just shake her head.

Princess K can turn an entire room into this in just a few short hours.

The standing rule here at the Super Mega Household is that when the kids finish playing with one toy, they need to put that toy away before playing with another toy.  If the toy isn't put away, then the toy goes on time out for awhile.

Since I work from home on certain days, I'm usually busy with something on the computer while one or both of the kids play by themselves.  OF COURSE, while my attention is on work, the kids completely ignore the house rules and pretty much do as they please.  Every toy is taken out.  Every container is emptied.  They bring toys from their rooms and closets.

I think it's some sort of competition between them to see how big of mess they can make and to see if they can out-due each other in just mass quantities of MESS.  When they are together, it's funny to just watch them trying to move as fast as possible trying to make a mess faster then the other kid.  It's very tiring watching them run around.

AND THEN, when it's time to clean up, usually around the time I notice that we are all now surrounded by piles and piles of toys and it's physically impossible to move across the room, the kids have NO IDEA who made the mess and blame each other for the pile of toys around the room.  There's more denying in the Super Mega household then in Wall Street, if you can believe that!

Sometimes, while I'm working, I notice that it gets REALLY quiet in the front room.  Eerily quiet.  I give a little shutter just KNOWING that something is amiss.  I tip toe into the front room and I usually catch them doing something REALLY bad, maybe drawing on the rug with PENS (Super Michael, I'm looking at YOU), or drawing all over their faces with PEN (Princess K I'm looking YOUR way now).

But sometimes, just sometimes, I catch them doing something cute just like Princess K up there in that cute picture.  I think if I had left her for much longer, she would have fallen asleep under there.  She was just laying under that box, not moving, just laying there.  I think all this mess making just poops her out.

This hits home for me.  I was a MESS growing up.  Toys everywhere and my dad could hardly take it.  He would come home and just be beside himself.  Little by little he brought me around to the clean and neat side.  Now I think I have a touch of OCD Smile  But hey, my house is clean.

I have vowed to take a different approach with my kid.

Did you break into my house when I wasn't looking and document what my kids do?
My daughter will take our 2 buckets of lego (just like the ones in your pic) and dump them ALLLL out. Then she walks away to play with something else. ARRGGGG!!!

@ DCUrbanDad:Hmmm, maybe that was MY problem.  My mom taught us to keep the house clean from a young age, so now my house is always a mess.  This answers a LOT of questions. ;)

Hard to believe that we were thinking of getting MORE Legos for Christmas, eh?  I think we decided on some toys with less PIECES if you know what I mean. Smile
